Service Description

Art Fundamentals is designed for creative minds who are ready for more artistic independence. While students are introduced to new subjects, techniques, and artistic concepts, this class places a strong emphasis on exploration, self-expression, and developing an individual artistic voice. It's the perfect environment for young artists who thrive with guidance but also appreciate the freedom to experiment, make creative choices, and work at their own pace. Running across three semesters following the SD48 school calendar, students build their skills throughout the year while exploring a wide variety of artistic mediums, including acrylic paint, watercolour, gouache, Posca markers, graphite, coloured pencil, ink, and mixed media. Each project begins with a new concept or technique, sometimes through a guided step-by-step lesson, before students are encouraged to adapt, expand, and interpret their learning using the materials and styles that inspire them most. Throughout the year, students strengthen both their technical abilities and their confidence as artists. We'll practice still life drawing to develop observation, hand-eye coordination, shading, perspective, and form. We'll explore painting techniques, colour theory, composition, and creative problem-solving while also working on applied arts projects that connect art to everyday life, such as surface pattern design, illustration, printmaking, decorative painting, typography, product and package design, and functional art pieces. Every effort is made to support each student both individually and as part of the group. We recognize that every artist learns differently, providing personalized guidance while creating an encouraging studio environment where students are inspired by one another, celebrate each other's successes, and feel comfortable taking creative risks. During the final semester, students will apply everything they've learned to create a larger, original artwork for our annual Happimess Art Gallery. This special exhibition celebrates each student's growth, creativity, and unique artistic voice while giving them the opportunity to experience the full artistic process—from concept and planning to execution and presentation. Classes follow the SD48 school calendar and are divided into three semesters. Registration reserves your child's place for the full school year, with each semester invoiced separately.
